📬 La newsletter del divendres #4 — The Friday's newsletter #4
Una escultura medieval italiana, el rococó a Munic, retaules barrocs catalans i molt més — A medieval Italian sculpture, the Munich's rococo, baroque altarpieces from Catalonia and much more.
A love letter to the conservation and study of Polychromed Wooden Sculpture and all the cool resources about it around the net. It’s a one-year bi-monthly newsletter project done just for fun. It’s also not perfect and doesn’t intend to, but rather a space to share. Edited in Catalan and English.
(Italy) The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence does not hold a lot of wooden sculptures, although it does preserve “the one and only” Maria Magdalena by Donatello. The museum was updated in 2015 and haven seen both before and after, now it allows the sculpture in its full glory, with a 360-degree view. The main hall is also a spectacular museography presentation, (see min 0’50). But one of the things that I like the most is this copy of de Virgin Mary with the Child, originally in stone. The copy was created for blind people to be able to touch and appreciate the sculpture. It is still quite rare to see this kind of initiatives, but let’s hope that will be one of many more to come (of course I touched it too 😏). Have someone seen other examples like this?

(Norway/the Netherlands) Justin Kroesen - We can agree that he already generates quite some interest just by seeing his background. His publications are a must, but especially his approach. Some here (also in the last book we mentioned), and if you would like to hear him, there is the amazing cycle of conferences that he did for the Museo Nacional del Prado in 2021, all available online1.

No està gens malament!
I didn’t know about this exhibition until I read this review. Seeing the video, it looks spectacular. “Bit Leib und Seele” (Body and Soul) was an exhibition from the Hypokunsthalle Museum in Munich (Germany) that explored the Munich rococo, with almost 160 artworks brought together for this occasion. And although it has been a while since It took place, there are still a lot of resources to enjoy it: this pdf, the catalogue, and thankfully, this digital visit. Not bad!

📖 L’art del retaule a Catalunya (Espanya) — the altarpiece art in Catalonia (Spain).
I try to intentionally share books that are available online or at least, some copies can be found in many public libraries through WorldCat. In some other cases, I will share books that although there are now widely known internationally or had large editions, are truly gems that need to be noticed by the community. Alba Daurada2 is exactly that: a gorgeous catalogue dedicated to the polychromed wooden sculpture (altarpieces to be more exact) from Catalonia in 1600-1792 (back then between Spain and France). Edited by Joan Bosch Ballbona.

We all know that the Getty Conservation Institute does really good work on sharing. AATTA Online is one of the many things they created, a really good database that needs to be saved, if you haven’t done it already.

Fins aquí l’entreteniment setmanal. Ens veiem en dues setmanes? That’s a wrap for this week's entertainment. See you in two weeks?

They are in Spanish, but remember that there is always the automatic (a slidly rudimentary) subtitles translation in many other languages.
Alba Daurada is the combination of the terms: “alba” from the Latin “Populus alba”= white poplar, and “daurada” the Catalan word for “golden” = golden poplar, which is, by the way, one of the most spread wooden species used in Catalan baroque altarpieces (but not the only one).
